Wesleyan Writer's Conference

Tomorrow I am going to the one day writers conference at Wesleyan University.

I have spoken at length here about how much of a non joiner I am, but if I am going to do this thing, this writing thing, then I am going to do it right. So off to a conference I go.

It isn't anything extraordinary. There will be an agent and a few editors who will speak and mingle. There will be some creative writing exercises and some story critiquing. There will be coffee breaks and lunch breaks and a dinner I paid for but won't attend (I have kiddles that will need me back home by then)

What is out of the ordinary is that I am going. I am taking a day off of work, a day away from my family. I am getting in my car and driving an hour so that I can be amongst strangers. Ugh. And what is startling me the most, is that I am excited about going!

First, I am meeting (in person) a writer friend who is along on this crazy ride and who, by the way, shamelessly haunts this blog without ever showing his face ;) (He emails me his commentary) So spending the day with him will be fun, and safer than going alone.

Second, I am a teacher and therefore a lifelong learner. I am not going to waste my money and not learn something.

Third, I get to come back and blog about it with you guys!

Here I go. Setting sail. Destination unknown, trying to take my eyes off the prize and focus on the journey.

  1. I've heard a lot of good things about the Wesleyan conference, but have never gone. Is this the one with a week of activities, but you choose which days/events you want to attend? Have fun, and I'm looking forward to your report!

  3. That's great that you are going. I haven't attended one yet, but I think in September I just may. There is going to be a really large conference here in Denver then, so I have until then to decide whether I want to fork over the rather large sum of money to attend. We'll see. I definitely want to hear your impressions when you return.

  4. HI All,

This is an itty bitty one day event. The larger conference was over 1,000 dollars and I couldn't do that. But I feel that this will give me a good taste of what a larger conference will be like, and then we can go from there. I will take good notes!

  5. Suzanne, Good for you! I think you'll love it. We have to step outside our boxes in order for truly magical things to occur. Can't wait to hear all about it!

  6. Don't forget to take your first three chapters, synop and query! I read somewhere that those are the essentials to bring along to any conference because you never know what might happen....

    Have fun! Learn lots! Network!

  8. Have fun! And, if you are going to be a 'joiner'....the writing community is by far the best one to link up with :)

  10. Have a wonderful time! There's no better place in the world than being surrounded by other writers. It's like the best version of being home. (Minus the loved ones.)
