Rose and Thorn

Hi ALL! Let's talk for a moment about the short story. The poem. The essay. THE PLATFORM! I have to admit, I've been on the short story bandwagon lately. I've submitted things all over the place. Why?

Two reasons:

As a writer I need to write, and a lot of work is coming out in the form of essay or short story. It cleans me up when I'm writing a novel. It helps me with killing my darlings (They become shorts!)

AND

As a writer I need to write. What? I said that already? Yeah. This one means as a writer I should have those pesky writing credentials. Ho humm, humm drum and often the difference. I used to abhor the short. Not anymore.

Anywho: There are lots of places to submit our work. I strongly urge my writer pals to get thee copies of The Writers Guide post haste.

There are wonderful E zines as well as online literary journals. One such journal(The Rose and Thorn) is even CO-EDITED by a wonderful bloggy pal Angie. Please click on their icon at the top of this post and peruse, submit, enjoy.

Pssst: really. start submitting those short stories and poems and essays wherever and whenever you can. why the hell not?

  3. Good advise and thanks for the links. Shorts are great things to have. I submit too. But it seems to be NF articles that get me in print... Hmmmm.
    Still working on the shorts.

  5. I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I really do need to submit something besides a novel. Like you said, why the heck not?

  10. Funny you should post this today, because my copy of "2009 Poet's Market" has been staring me in the face all day, and I've been trying to ignore it.

  13. Oh, it's so true! I have lists upon lists of places to submit short stories, and I'm trying to learn how to pare down my work and write short. I'm definitely doing it for a published credit... I want to have something to show for myself when I submit those novels!
