Spreading Greatness: Kenneth J. Harvey's THE TOWN THAT FORGOT HOW TO BREATHE

It's been a long time since I fell in "book love". Every Christmas I get gift cards to bookstores, (They make the nicest gifts) and one of my favorite things to do on winter break is to take my girls on an outing. I get a coffee... the oldest takes the little ones to the kids section and reads them books... and me? I get to peruse.

Usually, I've compiled a list of books that I want to buy. But this year, I went in cold and came out with a treasure.

Drawn in by the cover (The same image I stole from Amazon above) I read the blurb: "Something strange is happening in the seaside town of Barneed...." and then the first page... and then the second. It was love at page one.

Let me break this down:

  • Like ghost stories? This one's for you.
  • Like character driven plots? This one's for you.
  • Like a fantastical mystery? This one's for you.
  • Like a little social commentary in your story? This one's for you.
  • Enjoy beautiful writing? This one's for you.
  • Like to think about the book when you're not reading it? This one's for you.
Have you ever been so anxious, so terrified, so excited, so in love that you held your breath and didn't know it until the exhale? I have. And it's obvious the author, Mr. Harvey experienced it too. The novel chronicles an extraordinary week in a seaside town, depressed economically but rich in culture and tradition. And then the strange things start:

The ghost of one little girl haunts another. A perfectly sane man loses his mind. People lost at sea for hundreds of years come to the surface and look as if they'd died yesterday. And then there's the illness, the creeping mystery lung illness that's making everyone seem to forget how to breathe. Yeah, this book's really good.

It's dark and lovely, just how I like them.

Kenneth Harvey's been nice enough to agree to sign my copy and I'll be sending it along to one of my followers who comments on this post. I'll pick randomly. It's a great gift. Please be warned, I've read this book several times, so it's "well loved". But I like books that way, don't you?

  23. I like going into the bookstores blind and seeing what I can find. Sometimes I want to bring the whole store home with me, and other days I leave empty handed. (can you believe it's possible?)
